Subproject aims to promote quality of life for seniors in the Latgale region in implementing the concepts of active aging principles of supporting and increasing investment in local seniors in society and strengthening intergenerational ties, and cooperating Latvian Red Cross, municipalities and local informal groups of seniors.


Project Summary:

Subproject aims to promote quality of life for seniors in the Latgale region in implementing the concepts of active aging principles of supporting and increasing investment in local seniors in society and strengthening intergenerational ties, and cooperating Latvian Red Cross, municipalities and local informal groups of seniors. Direct sub-target: 120 seniors and 30 children and young people from the towns of Latgale region.
Places of project implementation: Daugavpils district and Ilūkstes district. Subproject activities: lifelong learning and recreational activities, active participation in activities which are planned both for training and lectures, and workshops and a "grandmother” service and various intergenerational activities.
Planned results include:

  • created in collaboration with municipalities councils strengthened the local initiative group of seniors in Daugavpils and Ilūkste;
  • developed in participation in public life for seniors in association with the volunteer performers.30 seniors worked as a volunteer organizing events, and thereafter. Identified 10 seniors, "the grandmother volunteer service" members who have mastered the necessary knowledge and skills;
  • implementation of two seniors for lifelong learning and recreational models. Subproject during lessons, training and exchange of experience participated in the 120 seniors;
  • LSK 10 trained staff and volunteers work with seniors audience to encourage participation in the LSK to legal and policy planning document, which affects the interests of seniors, the development process at various levels.


Project results:
  • Training was carried out within the framework of module for life-long learning and active leisure, which resulted in 300 seniors having gained confidence in their abilities and becoming more motivated, 120 seniors have received introductory lessons in working with computer, 30 young people have learned more about seniors' psychosocial portrait;
  • Within the framework of active participation module, 160 seniors have participated as volunteers in organising more than 10 events and activities;
  • More than 500 seniors and 100 children and young people have participated in 14 activities organised in the intergenerational interaction module. 76 students from Ilūkste and Daugavpils have participated in essay competition with their works;
  • 19 employees and volunteers from the Latvian Red Cross have participated in participation training, 8 employees and volunteers have participated in a four-day experience sharing visit to Switzerland, where they familiarised themselves with services for seniors and for promotion of intergenerational cooperation;
  • Brochure "Seniora ceļvedis aktīvai un veselīgai dzīvei" (Senior's Guidebook for Active and Healthy Life) has been issued in Latvian (5500 copies), Russian (2500 copies), English (500 copies), and German (500 copies) languages. The material is also available electronically at www.redcross.lv, www.dnd.lv, and www.ilukste.lv;
  • Manual for workers of local governments "Aktīvas novecošanas koncepcijas principi pašvaldību darbā" (Principles of Active Ageing Concept in the Work of Local Governments) has been issued. The material has been distributed electronically by transferring 170 USB memory sticks to the selected addressees;
  • Six hygiene centres for seniors have been established for washing clothes and taking shower. There was also a day centre established for seniors with disabilities by adjusting the premises accordingly;
  • At the result of the project, seniors in Daugavpils and Ilūkste municipalities have become more active and involved in public life. The training and activities promoting motivation have fostered development of new initiatives and increased the general quality of life of seniors. Intergenerational cooperation and the organisational capacity of the Latvian Red Cross have also been strengthened
